Lipid Metabolism in Plant Cell Cultures - Formation of Complex Ether Glycerolipids from Exogenous Alkylglycerols Heterotrophic cell suspension cultures of soya (Glycine max) and photomixotrophic cell suspension cultures of rape (Brassica napus) were incubated with long-chain alcohols. These substrates were esterified to wax esters and oxidized to fatty acids. - Photomixotrophic cell suspension cultures of rape were incubated with rac-1-0-alkylglycerols. These substrates were predominantly metabolized to neutral and ionic ether glycerolipids. Rape cells specifically incorporated 1-0-alkyl-sn-glycerols from a mixture of enantiomers into complex alkyl glycerolipids. Thus, both neutral and ionic 1-0-alkyl-2-0-acyln sn-glycerollipids with defined alkyl moieties can be prepared from racemic mixtures of alkylglycerols. This method recommends itself especially for the preparation of radioactive alkyl glycerophospholipids. In a similar manner 1-0-alk-l'enyl-2-0-acyl-sn-glycerophospholipids are formed from exogenous 1-0-alk-l'-enylglycerols. Biologically active 1-0-alkyl-2-0-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines, ‘platelet activating factor’ (PAF), can be prepared from 1-0-alkyl-2-0-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines formed by photomixotrophic rape cells." @default.
