- W2019279104 abstract "Thunderstorm observers have long noticed that an abrupt fall of rain at high rates sometimes occurs shortly after a lightning stroke and have proposed many explanations for this close association between lightning and rain. Some suggest that the falling rain produced or initiated the lightning; others propose that the lightning caused the formation or fall of the rain. For lack of adequate observational data, it has not been possible to resolve whether the lightning is cause or effect. New data on this phenomenon have been obtained by the use of a zenith-scan radar located directly beneath a nocturnal, slow-moving thundercloud on Grand Bahama Island. It was observed here that lightning strokes from clouds frequently occurred in the absence of intense precipitation echoes nearby, that shortly after the discharge a new echo suddenly appeared within the cloud and intensified rapidly, and that heavy rain fell to the ground 60 to 180 seconds after the stroke. These observations indicate that the lightning is more probably the cause rather than the result of the rain gush and that it may cause the sudden formation of heavy rain by greatly enhancing the rate of coalescence of cloud droplets." @default.
