- W2019367989 abstract "Preliminary in vitro experiments have indicated that CO2 or hydrogen ion concentration might be important in the action of thyrocalcitonin on bone. An attempt was made to test this hypothesis by determining whether or not the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, acetazolamide, would modify the hypocalcemic response to thyrocalcitonin in rats. It was found that when acetazolamide (50 mg/kg) was injected into intact rats either 2 hr prior to, or simultaneously with, a dose of thyrocalcitonin, the hypocalcemic response to the hormone was significantly reduced. Acetazolamide was without effect on the serum calcium in intact rats. In the acutely nephrectomized rat, acetazolamide inhibited both the hypocalcemic and the hypophosphatemic responses to the hormone. Whereas in the intact rat acetazolamide itself had no effect on the serum calcium and serum phosphorus levels, in the nephrectomized rat the drug caused a decrease in the serum calcium and an increase in the serum phosphorus. Similar results were obtained in th..." @default.
