- W201937114 abstract "The relation between emotions and judgments resembles that between ordinary perceptions and judgments: the way things appear to us perceptually is a standard basis for judging them to be the way they appear; but the appearance of things can also lead us to make false judgments. I discuss some epistemic advantages and liabilities that emotions lend to judgments, then I apply these points to some recent literature on emotions and judgments concerning risk. Lastly I turn to specifically moral judgments concerning risky technologies. Because emotions can both make unique contributions to the epistemic excellence of some kinds of judgments and can also degrade our judgments, a normative account of emotions and judgments must bring in the concept of virtues – dispositions to get the epistemic advantages and avoid the liabilities of emotions. Some virtues are dispositions to experience correct emotions, but it is psychologically unrealistic to think that a person can be formed in such a way as to have only judgment-enhancing emotions, and never judgment degrading ones. Some of our virtues will therefore be dispositions to respond with correct emotions, and others ones that enable us to transcend and/or by-pass our emotions in the interest of correct judgments." @default.
