Results show that the classical approximation often adopted is totally inadequate at low temperatures, and in particular a quantum treatment of the out-of-plane fluctuations is crucial. These fluctuations are very strong, demonstrating, for instance, the inadequacy of a mapping to the quantum sine-Gordon model.
