- W2019416312 abstract "In this paper, we review the long-term effects of behavioral or nonpharmacological approaches to hypertension, including relaxation and biofeedback therapy, physical exercise, salt restriction, and weight reduction. Relaxation and biofeedback therapy have been tested most comprehensively and with the most sophisticated research methodology, but their long-term clinical effectiveness was not confirmed in several recent large-scale trials, partially due to improvements occurring in the control groups during follow-up. Long-term studies on dietary interventions indicate modest effects from mild restriction of sodium intake but substantial benefits from weight loss. Dynamic physical exercise (cardiovascular fitness training) may lead to reductions in blood pressure, but few of the studies assessing the effect of exercise have been well controlled. Future research should be directed towards establishing predictors of treatment effects, designing behavioral methods to increase compliance and reduce drop-out rate, assessing further the effects of physical exercise, and developing more powerful behavioral interventions." @default.
