- W2019417234 abstract "Abstract When the methionine-requiring relaxed-mutant strain of Escherichia coli K12 is incubated with ethionine in place of methionine, growth, protein synthesis and RNA synthesis continue at a reduced rate. Ethionine is incorporated into protein, and ribosomes are produced which have the following properties. (a) The extent of association of the subunits to form 70 s and 100 s particles is less than for normal ribosomes over a range of Mg 2+ concentrations; (b) in 10 −4 m-Mg 2+ the ethionine ribosomal subunits in the 50 s region sediment more slowly than the normal 50 s subunits. There are more particles in the 30 s region than in the 50 s region and some of these contain 23 s RNA; (c) the RNA from ethionine ribosomes is submethylated to the same extent as the RNA from the subribosomal particles produced during methionine starvation; (d) if the E. coli are grown first with ethionine and then with methionine, the sedimentation properties of the ethionine ribosomes return to normal, but the ribosomal RNA remains submethylated." @default.
