- W2019464264 abstract "A quantitative treatment of an entropic repulsion mechanism by which polymeric dispersants may protect colloidal suspensions from adhesion to plane surfaces, or from flocculation, has been developed. The dispersants are terminally adsorbed macromolecules, treated as random chains constructed on a cubic lattice according to a four-choice model with a bond angle of 90°; a Monte Carlo method is used to obtain the distribution of thicknesses. The results show that increasing polymer size can lead to irreversible adhesion or flocculation of particles of a given size. Alternatively there is a minimum to the particle size stabilized by a given macromolecule. The minimum particle radius stabilized decreases only slowly with increasing molecular weight of polymer; the maximum radius increases almost linearly with molecular weight. The largest particles prevented from flocculating by a given polymer molecule are twice the radius of the largest ones prevented from adhering to a plane surface. Other differences between flocculation and adhesion behavior are small. The greater the freedom of movement of the polymer chain in all respects, provided it remains adsorbed, the more effective it is as a dispersant." @default.
