- W2019550575 abstract "Summary: A study of 260 consecutive, mid-first stage vacuum extractions is presented. In 106 patients the cervix was 9 cm dilated and in 154 patients it was 4 to 8 cm dilated. Extraction was carried out to accelerate the first stage of labour because of arrest or slow progress, fetal distress, cord prolapse or maternal distress. In 66.8% of patients delivery was completed within 10 minutes traction time, and in 24.6% of patients within 11 to 20 minutes. Soft tissue injuries of a minor degree were recorded in 14.2% of patients, including 5% cervical tears. Cephalhaematoma occurred in 6.9% of infants, significant scalp lacerations in 3%, and cerebral damage in 0.6%. The uncorrected perinatal mortality rate was 19.2 per 1,000 total births. Comparison of patients with a 9 cm dilated cervix and those with lesser dilation did not show any statistically significant difference as regards delivery within 20 minutes traction, cup slippage, maternal and fetal injuries, depressed babies at birth, or stillbirths." @default.
