- W2019555093 abstract "The adsorption of silicic acid on gibbsite (BET nitrogen area, 7.4 m2/g) suspended in NaCl solution (typically 10−2 M) has been measured over the pH range 4 to 11. For a fixed starting concentration of silicic acid, adsorption increased with increasing pH up to 9 and then decreased. Experiments at pH 9 showed that adsorption could be increased by increasing the NaCl concentration. Under some conditions, adsorption exceeded the maximum possible monolayer coverage. The adsorption was not reversible. The gibbsite did not remain inert: instead, there was a limited reaction between dissolved Al and silicic acid. Silica adsorption at pH 9 caused the gibbsite to peptize while adsorption at pH 4 caused coagulation. Various silica-coated gibbsites were characterized by measurement of electrophoretic mobility and Na+ and Cl− counter ion adsorption from dilute NaCl. With increasing silica adsorption the isoelectric point was reduced from pH 9 to a limiting value of about pH 3. Under some conditions of pH and silica adsorption, charge reversal occurred. For a given pH, Na+ counterion adsorption increased and Cl− counterion decreased with increasing silica adsorption. The results are used to explore the hypothesis that the octahedral surface of kaolinite carries a gel coating, rich in silica." @default.
