- W2019571567 abstract "Recently, Perrig and Perrig (1988; Memory and Cognition, 16 , 102–109) have suggested that mood states may be a sufficient but not necessary condition to produce mood-congruent effects. They suggested that a mood-congruent effect can be produced by activating the subject's knowledge about a mood state and its corresponding behavioral pattern. The present experiment was designed to test this hypothesis. We investigated mood-congruent recall using college students divided into depressed and nondepressed groups on the basis of their scores on the Beck Depression Inventory and, two simulation groups in which the subjects were instructed to behave as if they were in a specific mood (happy or sad). The results showed that a mood-congruent effect occurred in depressed and nondepressed groups. But, in mood-simulation groups a mood-congruent recall did not occur. These results suggest that mood states are necessary and (perhaps) sufficient to produce the mood-congruity effect." @default.
