- W201959650 abstract "The arterial system acts not only as a conduit for distribution of blood to 1 tissues but also as an apparent elastic reservoir that transforms the intermittent stroke volume ejected by the left ventricle into a continuous flow essential for metabolic exchanges at the tissue level. The elastic reservoir—like properties of the vasculature are also responsible for maintaining diastolic pressures that are essential for coronary perfusion. Large artery viscoelastic properties, including those of the aorta, are one of the determinants of the reservoir—like behavior of the arterial system. Alterations of these viscoelastic properties are known to occur with aging [1-7] and in pathological states, e.g., hypertension [8-11], inherited vascular diseases such as the Marfan syndrome [12,13], atherosclerosis [14,15], hypercholesterolemia and coronary artery disease [16-18]. Moreover, it has been suggested that altered stiffness of the aortic arch might identify patients at risk for development of occlusive epicardial coronary artery disease [18] and that arterial stiffness may be an independent cardiovascular risk factor [19]. In this chapter, we will focus on recent noninvasive methods developed to quantify aortic elastic properties in humans and discuss their physiological significance." @default.
