- W2019650620 abstract "Existing computational treatments of the range distribution of ions in matter attempt to embrace a wide variety of ions, targets, and ion energies. This can lead to difficulty in obtaining a physical understanding of range distributions, especially in the case of high energy ions for which the usual moments approach is shown to produce misleading results. A new analytic method for calculating detailed longitudinal ion range distributions at incident energies well above the stopping power maximum is described. Results are presented for the cases of protons and 12C ions. It is shown that ion-nucleus collisions lead to a long very low intensity tail on the range distribution, while electronic collisions are responsible for the Gaussian range straggling observed experimentally in this energy region." @default.
