- W2019685788 abstract "Different types of carbon samples, which are used as carbon support for proton exchange membrane fuel cells electrocatalysts as well as for gas diffusion layers, are treated by various methods in order to improve the adhesion of platinum metal to the carbon as well as to reduce the ionomer loading in the electrocatalyst layers. The samples are characterized by the point of zero charge method, FTIR and x-ray fluorescence before and after various oxidation and sulfonation treatments in order to determine the nature of functional groups, linkage of sulfonic groups with carbon, etc. The extent of surface modification in Vulcan Xc 72, Acetylene black and Ensaco 250G has been investigated. In addition, the extent of sulfonation of carbons to link sulfonic groups directly onto the surface of C-particles functioning as catalysts supports has been carried out in order to investigate the reduction in the weight percentage of Nafion loading, within the catalyst layer for proton conduction. The point of neutral charge evaluation helps in identifying the platinum complex to be used for electrocatalyst synthesis based on their charge." @default.
