- W2019850007 abstract "1. The S metabolism of citrus fruit--judged on its reaction with elemental S, in which H2S and SO2 gases and SO4 are formed, its reactions with H2S gas to give SO2 and SO4, and its reaction with SO2 to give SO4--exhibits many points of similarity with that of organisms ranging from lower animals to man and bacteria to angiosperms. 2. By the use of radioactive S (S35) it was determined that a very large proportion of the S in the H2S formed when lemons are dusted with elemental S and incubated at warm atmospheric temperatures (106⚬ F.) is derived from the S applied. The SO4 formed in the fruit peel may be derived largely amounts of S are applied, but the SO2 formed is derived largely from a source within the fruit. 3. Elemental S vapor penetrates lemons, producing compounds similar to those produced by fruit in contact with elemental S. The area of the S layer from which vaporization occurs and the length of exposure to warm temperatures (106⚬ F.) influence the amount of S products formed by lemons. 4. Radioautographs of the peel of lemons dusted with radioactive S and incubated at 106⚬ F. suggest the incorporation of the S into the tissue proteins." @default.
