- W2019875992 abstract "The world-famous Victoria Falls is found in the area of Livingstone, Zambia. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Livingstone in 1985 and 1986 with the aim of ascertaining residents' perception of tourism. Analysis of the survey data reveal that, overall, respondents do not have a noticeably enthusiastic view of tourism. However, it is demonstrated that important differences in residents' perception of tourism are associated with social status and social class cleavages. It is argued that a proper interpretation of the perception of tourism by a host population turns on the social structure of the region, and that the focus on overall responses or on individual sociodemographic variables, without an appreciation of social structure, obscures the meaning that host populations ascribe to tourism in their communities. @default.
