- W2019918187 abstract "Abstract The actual usage of the aorist and the imperfect in Serbo-Croatian has been discussed for decades, but until today there has been only one effort to collect data in order to draw any fundamental conclusions on this issue. By expanding the research field diaphasically and adding new variables, the aim of this paper is to give a wider and a more up-to-date look into the patterns of usage of preterites and the perfect tense, as well as the narrative present, in current spoken and written Serbo-Croatian. The method of data collection used was a questionnaire, based on tempoaspectual parameters set out in Östen Dahl's Tense and Aspect Systems (1985). The sample consists of 56 adults who have been residing in the Belgrade area for more than five years. The results show both an inability to use the imperfect tense and the use of the aorist in its default reading. The frequencies of the historical present and the aorist are inversely proportional to the temporal distance of the event, in opposition to the perfect tense. While the present and perfect tenses vary in opposite ways in relation to the subject's level of involvement, the use of the aorist does not vary significantly in relation to this parameter." @default.
