His graduate work has included instruction in Naval Construction and Marine Engineering at M. I. T., leading to an M. S. degree in 1944, and later, the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1964. As an Engineering Duty Officer, he has served in various Naval commands, which include: the Mare Island and New York Naval Shipyards; Chief Engineer of the USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CVA 41) during the Korean War; Fleet and Force Maintenance Officer on the staff of Commander in Chief; and Commander Service Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet. Within the Naval Ship Systems Command, formerly the Bureau of Ships, his duties have included: Director of the Ship Design Division; Head of the Hull Design Branch; Director of the Ship Design Division; and Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Ships for Design, Shipbuilding, and Fleet Maintenance. His subsequent positions were as Project Manager, Fast Deployment Logistic Ship Project from October 1965 to July 1967 and as Deputy Chief of Naval Material for Logistic Support from August 1967. He assumed his present command of Naval Ships Systems Command in July 1969, almost a year prior to taking the helm, as President of ASNE.
