- W201996572 abstract "Epidemiologic studies have indicated that a majority of the population shows signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMJ-dysfunction) though to a minor degree (for review, see 1). In some 25% of the subjects, however, the major symptoms (pain in the orofacial muscles and in the TMJ-region, clicking or crepitation of the joints, limited mouth opening and pain during movements of the jaw) require treatment. Little is known about the etiology of the disease, so that the treatment modalities used generally are based on clinical impressions. During the last decades, electromyography of the jaw muscles has been widely used to elucidate some of the etiologic aspects, since muscle hyperactivity has been generally agreed to be one of the prime causes. The silent period in the electromyogram, appearing after a tap on the chin, while subjects were clenching, has been especially studied. Since the duration of this silent period seemed to be prolonged in TMJ-dysfunction patients, it was proposed as a diagnostic tool (2). Recent findings however, questioned the above mentioned results because of the great intra-individual variability of the silent period duration and the few taps recorded (3,4). Moreover, the study of single sweeps, as most authors did, makes it difficult to interpret starting- and ending points of the silent period. Furthermore the wide overlapping range of “normal” and “pathologic” silent perion durations would result in over 40% of misclassifications (5)." @default.
