- W2019969458 abstract "Some properties of protein fractions separable by electrophoresis of trypanosome homogenates are described. The amino acid constitution of nine different trypanosomes and one trypanosomid flagellate (Strigomonas oncopelti) has been established qualitatively and quantitatively by paper chromatography and the results compared. The trypanosomes were T. cruzi (culture forms), T. lewisi, T. equinum, T. vivax, T. brucei (monomorphic), T. rhodesiense (polymorphic and fly transmissible), T. rhodesiense (normal and stilbamidine-fast monomorphic strains) and T. gambiense (monomorphic). Cystine (occasional traces), cysteine, arginine, lysine, histidine, aspartic and glutamic acids, serine, glycine, tyrosine, threonine, alanine, proline, valine, phenylalanine and leucine/iso-leucine were found in hydrolyzates of all flagellates. Intracellular free amino acids were demonstrable in all organisms at a level of approximately 2.5% (w/w) of cellular protein; T. lewisi was exceptional in showing a much lower level. The free amino acid pattern was characterized by a high content of alanine. The alanine content of T. lewisi protein was significantly lower than that of T. cruzi, but apart from a difference of borderline significance in the basic amino acid content of normal and stilbamidine-fast T. rhodesiense protein, all the organisms examined showed a closely similar amino acid constitution, qualitatively and quantitatively. The only carbohydrate material detectable in T. rhodesiense was glucosamine; this was also present in T. cruzi and T. lewisi." @default.
