- W2019970237 abstract "Sign languages have typical ways of structuring temporal and spatial relations. In this paper, the influence of these sign language structures on the spontaneous use of time and space markers in French and French Sign Language (LSF) is explored. The deaf subjects were 5 children (age 8–10), 4 adolescents (age 15–16) and 5 adults. The control group was formed by 12 hearing subjects with matching ages. Compared to the use of spatial and temporal markers in French by hearing subjects, the deaf subjects used relatively more markers if they were part of a spatialized structure in LSF. Moreover, compared to non-spatialized utterances, spatialized structures were more easily understood by deaf children and adolescents. Finally, deaf children showed a different pattern in processing spatial-temporal relations versus temporaltemporological relations: in the former they are guided by the spatial reference network which is not available in the latter. This offers an explanation for the different types of errors in understanding." @default.
