- W2019975562 abstract "RATIONALE: Recent studies have isolated the farm, rather than the general rural environment as the factor conveying a protective effect against atopy. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of allergic diseases and atopic sensitization among farm children, children in country town and children in big city.METHODS: The study was of cross-sectional design and included 1,830 children, aged 9-12 years, from farm area, country town and big city(Seoul) in Korea. A detailed questionnaire was completed and prick tests to sixteen allergens were performed. Blood samples were analyzed for serum IgE levels and eosinophil(%).RESULTS: Growing up on a farm and to a lesser extent on country town, were found to have a protective effect against all outcomes studied, both self-reported, such as wheezing, rhinitis, and eczema and sensitization. Serum IgE levels and eosinophil(%) were higher in farm children (282±472 IU/ml, 3.85±2.92%) and country town(312±537 IU/ml, 3.73±2.73%) than big city children(151±286 IU/ml, 3.40±2.51%). But the rate of atopic sensitization was lower in farm children(35.5%), country city(38.8%) than big city children(46.3%).CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that growing up on a farm and to lesser extent on country town may confer protection from both sensitization and allergic diseases in childhood. This is the first time evidence confirmed the protective effect of childhood farm contact on allergic sensitization in Asia area.
