- W2019984695 abstract "Abstract In recent years, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to operate various portions of the telephone system with an optical fiber used as the transmission element, even between the switchboard and the subset. Each of these systems, however, operates with electronic interfaces that propagate and receive the optical signal. This hybrid mode of operation creates the need for electronic devices as well as electrical power to energize the interface networks. In some instances, this requirement poses an inconvenience and often a hardship. It is desirable to extend these technological advances into a complete telephone subset that operates solely by means of optical/acoustic conversions and an optical transmission line. Such a development would eliminate the need for any type of electronic interface transducer and local or conducted power supply. In other words, the ultimate goal is a telephone set completely devoid of any metal parts, with no need for electrical power. The telephone would serve as part of a switched system and would (ultimately) be connected to the switchboard by means of a single optical fiber. This fiber would provide full duplex (two-way) traffic between the switchboard and the telephone. Because the telephone will not have a power supply of any sort, the optical fiber will provide whatever energy is needed for telephone operation. There is a growing body of opinion that in light of all the progress in fiber optic technology, the time for the all-optical telephone subscriber system has arrived. This paper will report on three developments that support this growing viewpoint. The first section will cover the concept of the all-optical telephone, offering functional descriptions of each operational component. The second section will report on efforts by an Army contractor (Harris Corp., Melbourne, Florida) to develop workable designs for the more problematic elements. Finally, the third section will offer an approach to interfacing the optical fibers from the optical telephone with an electronic central office. This interfacing circuit will be broken down into its operational components, each of which will be functionally described. Thus, in view of the high transmission quality of the optical fibers now on the market and the quantum improvements being made in the design and manufacture of fiber optic couplers and splices, this paper should strengthen the conviction that the all-optical telephone subscriber system is right over the horizon." @default.
