- W2019985751 abstract "HOTTA, H., TANAKA, R., SUNAGA, H., AND ARAI, H. The Dependence of Self-Focusing of a High-Intensity Pulsed Electron Beam on Gaseous Media as Studied by Depth-Dose Distributions. I. Hydrogen and Monatomic Gases. Radiat. Res. 63, 24-31 (1975). The depth-dose curves in a stack of aluminum absorbers and blue cellophane sheets were determined for a pulsed electron beam that emerged from a Febetron 706 and passed through H2, D2, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe at various pressures. The curves indicate that the beam is self-focused in two pressure regions, i.e., below 15 Torr and above 20 Torr. Results in the first region enable us to determine the relative total ionization cross sections of the gases; they were obtained from the gas pressure at which the beam was self-focused to a fixed degree. The pinch of the beam above 20 Torr can be explained in terms of the recombination processes of secondary electrons with positive ions. The recombination coefficients in monatomic gases are discussed in support of our point of view. The pinch declines again at high pressures as a consequence of the competition between self-focusing and multiple scattering." @default.
