- W201999610 abstract "The early history of electroencephalography (EEG) focused on discrete phenomena and patterns that could be identified in the electrical rhythms generated by the brain and measured between a scalp electrode and a reference electrode. The waking state is associated with fast activity (greater than 12 Hz). The alpha rhythm (8–12 Hz) was noted to be associated with eyes-closed resting. Slow waves (less than 8 Hz) have been associated with certain phases of sleep and fast activity occurs in rapid eye-movement sleep. The most notable abnormalities are the spike waves associated with seizures, slowing of rhythms associated with brain tumors, and the periodic sharp wave complexes characteristic of Creutzfeld-Jacob disease. Non-specific slowing is also observed in dementia. In the past, these observations have represented the limits of information obtainable from the EEG. EEG represents a phenomenon generated in the radially-oriented apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons in cortical structures of the encephalon, including the neocortex, and paleocortex, and archicortex. The source of the recorded signal at the scalp can be any combination of activities anywhere in the vicinity between the scalp electrode and the reference electrode." @default.
