- W2020001137 abstract "Summary With the aid of preliminary models, it has been established that minimum temperatures, in combination with their duration and the extent to which they fall below the threshold value (7 to 9 °C), induce the enzymatic potential for cis-polyisoprene biosynthesis in guayule. Daylength has also been shown to indirectly inhibit the enzymatic potential for rubber through its influence on growth. Environment was shown to have no specific influence on the enzymatic potential for trans-terpene resins, thus facilitating the establishment of a correlation between minimum temperatures as a controlling factor at a penultimate stage in the biosynthetic pathway leading to the synthesis of cis-polyisoprene. Furthermore this study has demonstrated that by developing models, as illustrated by the preliminary model for the experimental site, potential values for rubber production could be predicted for a particular area by clarifying the effect, on the plants' rubber producing potential, of the prevailing climatic conditions pertinent to the area under consideration. This could have far reaching implications in assessing the suitability of areas not only for the successful cultivation of guayule, but also for maximum rubber production. The results of this preliminary study also serve to show that eco-physiological observations in field experiments should be planned according to the growth pattern of the plants under investigation rather than to the more convenient calendar year." @default.
