- W2020046723 abstract "Advanced biomedical nanostructures are widely recognized as one of the most promising research areas seeking potential innovative solutions for many biomedical applications. What is most encouraging about this field is that it evolves very rapidly. Nanostructured biomaterials in forms of spheres, rods, tubes, crystals and fibers have been fabricated and assembled into a variety of novel biomedical devices. These biomedical devices with nanofeatures have demonstrated intriguing properties on the regulation of cell-biomaterials interactions from gene/molecular level to cellular level. The progress in the design of an artificial cellular micro/nanoenvironment has revealed the remarkable ability of cells to adjust their cytoskeletal remodelling, shape and motility. This ability of cells to sense their environments on a nanometer scale represents the recognition of not only the biochemical diversity, but also the physical topographical characteristics, such as pliability, dimensionality and ligand spacing. Thus, nanostructured biomaterials have potential applications in the fields of tissue engineering, biosensors, drug delivery, regenerative medicine and implant technology. Future prospects for the combination of nanotechnology and biomaterials in medical applications appear to be excellent, both for fundamental research or clinical application. To promote bilateral exchange and collaboration between Chinese and German scientists in this increasingly important field, we proposed to organize a Sino-German Symposium on Advanced Biomedical Nanostructures under the auspices of the Sino-German Centre for Research Promotion (SGC). With the financial support from SGC, the symposium took place from 26.-30. October 2009 in Jena, Germany. Eleven Chinese scientists, twenty five German scientists and seventeen selected students were invited to participate in this event. Dr. Miaogen Zhao on behalf of SGC specially participated in this symposium. The majority of these participants are established scholars and promising young scientists in the field of their research. This symposium provided a platform for promoting communication and friendship, strengthening the existing cooperation, nurturing future joint projects and exchange of knowledge as well as young researchers, between Chinese and German scientists in the area of advanced biomedical nanostructures. This Special Issue of Advanced Biomedical Nanostructures collected most of the contributions from the participants with peer review process. It contains XXX review articles and XXX research articles from Chinese and German researchers. These articles address the challenges and development in the field of advanced biomedical nanostructures, such as the design, fabrication and characterization of biomedical nanostructures for gene/protein delivery, interactions with cells and implant technology. We hope that this special issue will provide readers with a current snapshot of the scientific activities in advanced biomedical nanostructures. We believe for certain that more exciting developments in this field will follow in the near future." @default.
