- W2020124760 abstract "Benthonic Foraminifera have proved to be useful biostratigraphic indicators in the Mesozoic marine clastic End_Page 2468------------------------------ rocks of northern Alaska. In Triassic and Jurassic rocks, nodosarids are prominent, but they are a minor component of the post-Neocomian Cretaceous rocks. In much of the Cretaceous sequence, agglutinate Foraminifera predominate and generally only a few species dominate a fauna. The largest faunas are in the thick clastic sequence accumulated during the middle to late Albian Stage of the Early Cretaceous, whereas the smallest are in the relatively thin rock sequence of the Cenomanian and Senonian Stages of the Late Cretaceous. Foraminifera of earliest Cretaceous age are similar to those of the latest Jurassic; in many areas this similarity causes a major problem in deciphering the complex tectonic and depositional events that occurred in that time interval. At present, at least 2 faunal zones are recognized. Of the 6 foraminiferal zones recognized in post-Neocomian rocks, 4 are based on agglutinate Foraminifera, 1 on calcareous benthonic forms, and 1 on planktonic Foraminifera. Two of the zones are of Albian age, 1 is Cenomanian, 2 are Turonian, and 1 is Campanian. Only 2 planktonic species are known throughout the entire Mesozoic sequence in northern Alaska. These are hardy, long-ranging, Late Cretaceous forms which were widespread in North America during a brief interval in the early part of the Turonian when fairly uniform climatic conditions extended from the Gulf of Mexico coastal area to the Arctic. In general, however, the Foraminifera (and also Radiolaria) in most of the Arctic Cretaceous rocks suggest that climatic conditions were probably much like those of the present.
