- W2020124930 abstract "Resistance exercise is followed by a transient hypotensive recovery period. The influence of intensity on this hypotensive response has not been well established, but may be important, particularly among older adults, who may not tolerate hypotension very well. The study examined systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, heart rate (HR) and rate pressure product (RPP) after incremental resistance exercise in older adults. Therefore, 6 women (mean age = 70.67 ± 3.29yrs) and 2 men (mean age = 67.5 ± 2.5 yrs), performed 15 repetitions of dual-leg knee extension exercises at 20, 40, 60 and 80% of 5-RM, separated by 4-minute rest periods. Continuous blood pressure and ECG data were acquired throughout the test, and RPP was derived from SBP × HR. For each intensity, the dependent variables are reported during rest, peak exercise response, and the minimum for each recovery period (R30; R60; R90; R120; R150; R180). A mixed-model ANOVA was used to examine the influence of condition and test period on the CV parameters. Alpha was set a-priori at p < 0.05 and corrected to 0.006 using the Bonferroni technique for multiple comparisons. The results indicate that SBP was significantly lower at R150 and R180 compared to baseline (p = 0.0001), and SBP during exercise was significantly higher (p = 0.0001) than baseline and all recovery periods. While this was also true of DBP, there was a significant condition × test period interaction (p = 0.0001) such that DBP during recovery was lower following higher exercise intensities. Furthermore, there was an interaction on heart rate such that the greater the exercise intensity, the higher the post-exercise HR (p = 0.0001). These data suggest that the diastolic hypotensive response following resistance exercise is intensity dependent, and related to recovery HR." @default.
