- W2020166935 abstract "In the building sector, environmental assessment methods are widely recognized as efficient strategies to encourage environmental responsibility. More than 20 years of implementation form the basis of this recognition, during which stakeholders and the industry have adopted these methods, which have stimulated sustainable construction. With over 201,000 certified buildings, Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is the world's leading environmental certificate. The Building Research Establishment's broad experience and years of research have been beneficial in the formation of the methodology BREEAM is based on. A new BREEAM scheme addressing the impact of development projects within the built environment was launched recently. A holistic set of indicators and performance targets that will eventually determine the urban project's robustness is identified by BREEAM Communities. Target and benchmark selection and assessment framework definition are key issues that geographic and social context strongly determine. The adaptation and future implementation of BREEAM Communities into the Spanish context is now the responsibility of the Instituto Tecnologico de Galicia (ITG). Extensive consultation with a broad range of experts and stakeholders will be involved in the adaptation process providing feedback in some 40 areas of expertise, thus generating a comprehensive sustainable urbanization knowledge base. The main issues under consideration during this process and interaction of the assessing criteria with the Spanish legal and environmental framework will be pointed out in this paper." @default.
