- W202019626 abstract "Some Malawian Myths One reason for reviewing the history of a particular sector of an economy is to assess whether the assumptions being made by current policy makers are actually in line with historical fact. This paper will start by considering four concepts which provide the basis for a good deal of the tMnking of planners in the donor community who are concerned with agricultural policies and projects for Malawi. These are: 1) The reason why Malawian smallholder agriculture is dominated by is because the regime forced people to leave their traditional crops and plant maize. This statement in one form or another occurs time and again in project and the policy documents of both major donors and non-government organisations. 2) Now that Dr. has gone every effort should be made to encourage farmers to revert to their indigenous crops which are more suited to Malawi and are more nutritious than maize. 3) The regime made no effort to diversify smallholder agriculture and this must now be a priority. 4) The main obstacle to be overcome in bringing about diversification is the extreme conservatism of Malawian smallholders both with regard to their farming practices and their eating habits. How closely do these statements tally with historical fact? The Banda forced people to grow maize myth is easily dealt with. Not only is there no example in Africa of a government forcing a whole population to change its staple food but the agricultural records for the 1950's show that a higher proportion of smallholder land was allocated to in that decade than at the height of the Dr. Banda's regime in the 1970's. The facts are quite clear but the myth continues to cloud planners' thinking. Why then did farmers leave their indigenous crops and why are they not returning to them now? Malawian farmers grew four indigenous crops before the introduction of foreign plants. These were sorghum, millets, Bambara earthnuts (nzama) and semi-domesticated yams. In addition a range of wild plants were eaten. When was brought in from America people quickly adopted it for three good reasons. It was higher yielding than the indigenous grains, the seeds were protected from bird damage by a sheath and it tasted better than" @default.
