- W202026095 abstract "This chapter highlights the estimation of population parameters from sample statistics, in particular averages and standard deviations. One can never even hope to hit the population parameter exactly, but choose, as estimates, those with desirable properties, such as, unbiasedness and efficiency. The point estimates are single values, such as y, s for measurement data, or p = y/n for binomial data, or y or ρ for Poisson data. They are calculated from the data at hand. Point estimates that are used in general are unbiased and efficient as well as consistent and sufficient. The other form of estimation is that of setting from the data at hand an interval, which prior to drawing the sample, had a 1 – α probability of containing the parameter. If two samples and populations are involved, one may set confidence limits on the difference of two corresponding parameters or on σ1/σ2 possibly. The interpretation of such intervals is that one may be 100(1- α) % confident of the parameter or parameter function lying within the interval." @default.
