- W2020282209 abstract "To the Editor: —There is unanimity of opinion that many cases, probably the majority, of acute barbiturate intoxication require only good symptomatic therapy (Koppanyi, T., and Fazekas, J. F.:Am. J. M. Sc.224:577, 1952). Numerous pharmacologists and clinicians, however, have demonstrated that, in severe barbiturate poisoning in animals (Tatum, A. L.:Physiol. Rev.19:472, 1939) as well as in humans (Koppanyi, T., and Fazekas, J. F.:Am. J. M. Sc.220:559, 1950), certain central analeptics are of lifesaving value. The problem is the selection from the numerous cases of acute barbiturate poisoning of those requiring specific analeptic therapy. The history, barbiturate blood levels, and physical signs cannot always be relied on; in fact, in many instances, the history and blood levels may not be available to the physician and are, sometimes, misleading.
