- W2020454484 abstract "Considerable attention has been paid to models of whole plant respiration during the past 15 years. It is hoped that successful models will aid understanding of whole plant physiology and point to areas of research which will lead to increased crop productivity. Today's most popular model of whole plant respiration considers respiration as the sum of functional components: growth respiration and maintenance respiration. Recently a third component has been explicitly added to the model: respiration associated with ion uptake. In this paper, the history and applicability of this model are outlined; problems with the model and its applications are discussed; the maintenance component is expanded into two separate components which are then used to interpret some existing data for respiration; and additional facets of higher plant respiration which may need to be incorporated into future models are identified. Although there are shortcomings of a simple application of the model, the model is a useful tool for the whole plant physiologist when these limitations are recognized." @default.
