- W2020590470 abstract "Objective: Apelin has recently been reported to be involved in the regulation of vascular smooth muscle contraction in both arteries and veins. Asymetric dymethyl arginine (ADMA) which is critically involved in the mechanism of endothelial dysfunction also regulates blood pressure. Alterations in circulating apelin and ADMA levels have been reported in several cardiometabolic disorders. In the present study, we investigated blood apelin and ADMA concentrations and their relation in primary hypertension. Design and method: A total of 30 young (mean age: 24.4 ± 1.9) male patients with newly diagnosed hypertension who had no other diseases or drug use of any, and 30 age and body mass index matched healthy controls were enrolled. Morning plasma apelin and ADMA levels were measured with ELISA before taking any type of treatment. Results: Blood apelin level was significantly lower and ADMA level was significantly higher in the patient group compared to healthy controls (p = 0.04, for both). Both apelin and ADMA levels were related to the systolic blood pressure (beta = 0.285, p = 0.03; beta = -0.393, p = 0.003, respectively). Conclusions: The alterations in plasma apelin and ADMA levels in such a group of young people without confounders and complicated hypertension suggest that changes in the synthesis and secretion of the two proteins participate in the mechanism of hypertension from the very early stages." @default.
