- W2020705351 abstract "(1) Responses of units in a specific ventrolateral fasciculus of the medial forebrain bundle (VMFB) in the lateral hypothalamus of anesthetized rats have been studied during two types of olfactory stimulation. Single shocks of the ipsilateral olfactory bulb drove units with latencies predominately in the range of 3–30 msec, but with a few cases of longer latencies up to 90 msec. In spite of the large range of latencies across units, the variability of individual units was small. Units of the lateral hypothalamus have also been shown to respond to stimulation with air borne odors and with thresholds similar to those of units of the olfactory bulb. (2) Units with short latencies to olfactory bulb shock were more likely to respond to air borne odors. (3) A small sample of hypothalamic units were tested repeatedly with a graded intensity series of different odors and compared to the response of olfactory bulb units to the same odors. No hypothalamic units showed the degree of discrimination between odors that was observed in 5 of 19 olfactory bulb units. (4) Fewer than 4% of the hypothalamic neurons responding to olfactory stimuli were suppressed during odor stimulation. This is in contrast to a greater occurrence of inhibitory responses observed in the olfactory bulb in the present work and reported in other parts of the olfactory system by other workers." @default.
