- W2020758054 abstract "Funny how high school students never change. In early spring of my own senior year of high school, 1991, I was preparing for the college Advanced Placement art exam and feeling as if my portfolio was a little anemic. I just needed a few extra drawings to round it out. Like many seniors before me, I solved this problem the same way I had solved many others—by skipping school. I started driving aimlessly around my Georgia suburb in my enormous hand-me-down brown station wagon, looking for something interesting to draw. I ended up on the narrow construction driveway leading to the site for the shiny new county performing arts center, thinking that a half-constructed building might provide a good subject for a drawing. As I inched along the dirt service road, I spotted out of the corner of my eye an old, rundown house just off the path. I pulled the station wagon up the gravel driveway and parked in front. I climbed on the hood, sketchbook in hand, and started drawing this home that was likely to be torn down before my own graduation. After sketching for a few minutes, I became concerned that I might be invading someone’s property. I climbed down off my car and cautiously approached the front door to ask for permission to do a rendering of the rustic house. The front door swung open at my touch, revealing the barren landscape of an obviously abandoned home. I crept into the room, the floorboards groaning under my tennis shoes, and took a look around. Who lived here? I wondered. What made them leave? How long have they been gone? It seemed ages since anyone had occupied the house—a few windows were broken and had allowed the entry of crunchy, orange-and-gold leaves, which skittered across the mildewed carpet. I grew bolder in my exploration, finding a shoebox in a closet that contained letters and postcards telling the story—" @default.
