- W2020841269 abstract "A study has been made of the effect of oxygen tensions on the uptake of water by starved and predesiccated females of Echinolaelaps echidninus. Gas mixtures of nitrogen and oxygen containing O, 2.5, 5, and 10% oxygen were used. Mites in an oxygen-deficient (pure nitrogen) atmosphere lost weight though the relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere was over 90% while the control group in a hydrating atmosphere gained weight. The changes in weight reflect movement of water to and from the mite. It is therefore concluded that the process of water uptake in these mites is an active physiological one and requires oxygen for its proper functioning. Mites could withstand concentration of nitrogen up to 97.5% but were killed by an atmosphere of pure nitrogen." @default.
