- W2020848552 abstract "In children, the need for an endoscopic procedure equates with the need for sedation. The goals of sedation are analgesia, anxiolysis, and amnesia. Options available include endoscopist-directed conscious sedation and deep sedation or general anesthesia administered by an anesthesiologist. The endoscopist's choice of sedation must take into account the patient's age, maturity level, and disease state, the type and duration of procedure, risks and benefits of each sedation method, and desires of the patient and parent. While certain procedures dictate the need for general anesthesia, most procedures can be safely and efficiently completed under intravenous sedation with the combination of a narcotic and a benozdiazepine. Proper preparation of the patient, parent, endoscopy personnel, and endoscopy suite are imperative to successful sedation and thus a successful procedure. Postprocedure monitoring is important to insure that patient has fully recovered from sedation." @default.
