- W2020868505 abstract "The purpose of this project was to test the hypothesis that physical activity (PA), fitness (PF) and obesity (OB) are related to work productivity (PROD). Using an observational study design, we studied a group of subjects recruited through three health plans and one employer group across five sampling strata (N = 2,539): random sample, high health care utilizers, chronic disease patients, history of emotional problems, and history of depression-related disorders treatment. Final study sample included 683 survey respondents (mean age 46.4 y; 60.8% female). PA was expressed as vigorous (times/wk) and moderate (days/wk), PF as estimated VO2max (ml/kg/min), and OB as BMI (kg/m2) quartiles (normal, overweight, obese, morbidly obese). PROD measures were self-reported quantity (QUAN) and quality (QUAL) of work, getting along with co-workers (GA), extra effort (EE), work rate (WR) and work loss days (WLD). Ordinary least squares regression models were used to assess associations between predictor variables of PA, PF, OB and PROD, controlling for sex, age and education. Significant (p < 0.05) findings predicted: PA-vigorous increases WR; PA-moderate increases QUAL, WR; PF increases QUAN, EE; BMI-morbidly obese increases WLD and BMI-obese decreases GA. These data suggest that PROD during work (presenteeism) is mostly associated with PA and PF, while OB is associated with absenteeism-related decrements in PROD. Supported by John D. and Catherine T.
