- W2020939275 abstract "Summary The purpose of this study is to investigate therapists' construction of gender through an examination of clinicians' attributions of expressiveness and instrumentality. Ninety-nine therapists participated in this study by watching a 25 minute videotaped vignette of a clinician interviewing a Caucasian female-male couple. Half of the participants viewed a female actor performing an expressive role with a male actor performing an instrumental role, while the other half watched a tape where the roles were reversed. After viewing the video tape, the participants completed the Bem Sex Role Inventory for the husband and wife and two one-item measures of power and gender. The results indicated that the sex of the actor organized therapists' construction of expressiveness and instrumentality. For example, when the woman was performing the expressive role she was rated higher on expressiveness than the man when the man was performing the same role. These findings suggest that the dominant discourse on gender may have infiltrated therapists' empirical assessments of their clients' behavior. The relevance of this study to training is also discussed." @default.
