- W2021005488 abstract "The problem of the best balancing of secondary spherical aberration (sixth-power aberration) in photographic lenses by controlled amounts of primary spherical aberration and defocusing is investigated computationally with the help of modulation transfer functions (ct-functions). Monochromats with 4, 6 and 12 wavelengths of sixth-power aberration are examined, each over a range of fine-corrections and of focal settings and each working at an arbitrary focal ratio F R 2. In each case the image is received on four different model emulsions and the image quality is evaluated in two different ways, namely by means of its photographic Strehl definition and by means of its photographic structural resolution. The aerial images are also considered. It appears that in images with four wavelengths of sixth-power aberration (the Rayleigh tolerance limit) the best image quality is obtained sufficiently well for practical purposes in an ‘edge-corrected’ system, that is to say one in which the balancing fourth-power abe..." @default.
