- W2021047739 abstract "A year ago I wrote about my experiences as a History student at 'the Karl Marx University Leipzig in the Democratic Republic of Germany' (see HMJ 30, Autumn 1990, pp. 259-60). If I provide a further installment, it must now reflect my views as a student as 'the Leipzig University in the new federal state of Saxony in the Federal Republic of Germany'. Just how sure the rectorate was about which way the vote on the name of the University would go was shown by a certificate of honour bestowed on one of the teaching body. He received his honorary certificate from the University of Leipzig minus the name of Karl Marx some weeks before the vote had even been held. So, instead of finally taking up the challenge of the great philosopher and social critic of the nineteenth century, now free from party and state-political dogma, it was asserted that the name of Karl Marx and his works had been discredited by the history of communism in the twentieth century. A strategy of educational policy in the new states of the Federal republic was devised and the name coined for it by politicians was 'Abwicklung' the 'winding up'. The government's declared aim is to dissolve all the educational institutions both the personnel and the structures which were closely bound up with the political doctrines of the GDR and the SED. Some institutes are to be newly structured and integrated with the help of experienced academics from the old Federal Republic. Many others, however, are destined never to be 'redeveloped'. The demand for radical renewal of structures and people is more than justified. But this sledgehammer politics of getting rid of everyone means that not only the many hardliners but also those few academics who were critical spirits before the U-turn ('Wende') lose their jobs, and it shows the cold calculation and incompetence of those responsible for this policy. The 'winding up' decisions were our 1990 Christmas present from the state governments. For students, they could mean the non-recognition of university qualifications, the complete abolition of your course of study, or the further diminishing of your career chances. Now students of the faculties who were hardest hit by these decisions started to react: journalism, economics, politics (the old Marxist-Leninism), law. They reacted as the victims of a development whose broad trends, however, certainly could have been foreseen. They blockaded the university, held demonstrations in front of the state parliament building, put on discussion forums with politicians, held vigils during Christmas and New Year, organized protest marches. Six students went on hunger strike. Concessions were made. Some qualifications received recognition; some new institutes were established. But many students simply left for universities in the West of Germany and many are still going. Others changed their subject of study or broke off their studies altogether. During the highpoint of the student protests a banner hung in the Uni courtyard which read: 'Those who don't blockade tomorrow will be punished for life' glossing" @default.
