- W2021090108 abstract "Abstract 1. 1. Prometamorphic tadpoles (stages 53–54 and 57–58) and juveniles of Xenopus laevis differ in response to salt water stress. 2. 2. The amount of NH 4 + in the blood decreases after adaptation to 0.9 or 1.2% salt water in all larval stages and juveniles. 3. 3. The urea content of the blood increases slightly in larvae but strongly in juveniles. Correspondingly, the amount of excreted NH 4 + decreases and urea increases with salt water adaptation. 4. 4. The excretion rate for urea measured with the help of injected radioactive urea is much higher in larvae than in juveniles. 5. 5. It is reduced when juveniles are adapted to 0.9 or 1.2% salt water but is increased in larvae under the same conditions. 6. 6. The urea pool of the animals calculated from the excretion rate and the excreted amount of urea is reduced in larvae under osmotic stress but is strongly augmented in juveniles. 7. 7. Going through metamorphosis, Xenopus develops a mechanism to prevent urea loss when this compound is needed for higher osmolality of the body fluids." @default.
