- W2021108977 abstract "Embodying Colonial Memories: Power, and the Hauka in West Africa. PAUL STOLLER New York: Routledge, 1995; 226 pp. Paul Stoller's Embodying colonial memories is a masterfully written blend of social theory, anthropology, and history which focuses on the bodily experience of spirit possession, specifically on the power of mimicry and its political uses in the Republic of Niger. A highly provocative and innovative study filled with fascinating detail and theoretical reflection on historical memory and symbolic politics, it opens up exciting new possibilities for the anthropological analysis of spirit possession as an embodied phenomenon. In adding to the growing number of ethnographic descriptions of incorporation processes emphasizing sensory analysis and challenging the traditional emphasis on inscription, he stresses the importance of the transformation of ritual practice into political power. Stoller has a gift for a literary approach to anthropology and theory. For example, in the deftly written prologue, Diplomacy On A Dune, he richly evokes the village setting for the horrific comedy of Hauka possession in which adepts become possessed by the spirits of enraged colonial military figures. The reader will be captivated by the intense literary quality and the brevity and clarity of the text which make this a memorable fusion of ethnography, history and creative reflection on the power of the mimetic faculty as advanced by Michael Taussig in Mimesis and alterity (1992; New York, Routledge). The first section of the book, Sensing Possession, is composed of three brief chapters: Spirit Possession, Cultural Memory, and lastly Embodied Memories: Mimesis and Possession. These lively and intellectually stimulating chapters, inspired by an eclectic literature, most notably by Paul Connerton's How societies remember (1989; New York, Cambridge University Press) and George Lipsitz's Time passages (1990; Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press), constitute the theoretical backdrop for the study. Reviewing previous approaches to the study of possession and demonstrating the embodiment (incorporation) of history and politics in possession, Stoller delivers an insightful critique of this literature situating his own evolution away from performance models of possession to understanding possession as a form of multisensorial embodiment, as a site of mimetic production and a continual fashioning of cultural memory. Emphatically distancing himself from discursive approaches, he evocatively argues that Songhay spirit possession triggers embodied counter-memories of the colonial period and provides a context for the expression and exercise of power. Creatively drawing upon Taussig's work, he proposes that the magic involved in the sensuousness of the mimetic faculty (or Benjamin's capacity to other) creates a physical sense of mastery which empowers the possessed and explains the political power and resilience of the Hauka cult. The second section of the book, Confronting Colonialism in West Africa, provides a theoretically informed and broad review of colonial history and colonial and postcolonial resistance in the region. Herein Stoller eschews binary oppositions in studies of domination and grounds his study in ethnographic and historical detail. In the last and more provocative pages of this section, be reflects upon embodied oppositions to whiteness as recorded by African art historians. Elegantly re-engaging Taussig, he proposes that such examples of mimesis provide a means for tapping into sources of power in order to counter colonial despair. The third section, Migrating with the Hauka, describes the historical and political context within which the Hauka movement emerged and was subsequently dispersed. He describes the brutality and upheaval of the colonization process, as well as strategies of resistance including migration and the spread of Islam which resulted in profound social, economic, and political changes in the region. …" @default.
