• W2021307777 abstract "This report is a brief survey of the quantification of dietary requirements for essential fatty acids (EFA) in rats and humans, and an evaluation of criteria used in such quantification. Many of the complications that make accurate quantification difficult and uncertain are pointed out, including the multiplicity of symptoms of EFA deficiency, interconversions that occur in unsaturated fatty acids, competitive inhibitions in such conversions, and conversions of the more important EFA to prostaglandins and other biologically active compounds. Physiologically based criteria and so-called ”︁biochemical indexes”︁ that are used or have been proposed for use in determining EFA requirements, are described and evaluated. It is concluded that mainly because of the very limited information that is available about the end functions of EFA and compounds biosynthesized from them, results of attempts to quantify EFA requirements are at present very uncertain. A tentative approach to assessing EFA requirements on the basis of the present limited knowledge about the functions of EFA and biologically active compounds biosynthesized from them, is proposed. Über die Quantifizierung des Bedarfs an essentiellen Fettsäuren Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über die Quantifizierung des Nahrungsbedarfs an essentiellen Fettsäuren bei Ratten und Menschen sowie eine Beurteilung der Kriterien für solche Quantifizierung. Auf viele Komplikationen, die eine genaue Quantifizierung erschweren, wird hingewiesen, darunter die Vielfältigkeit der Symptome beim Mangel an essentiellen Fettsäuren, gegenseitige Umwandlung der ungesättigten Fettsäuren, konkurrierende Hemmung dieser Umwandlungen sowie die Umwandlungen der wichtigen essentiellen Fettsäuren zu Prostaglandinen und anderen biologisch aktiven Verbindungen. Physiologische Kriterien und die sogenannten „Biochemischen Indexe”︁, die zur Bestimmung des Bedarfs an essentiellen Fettsäuren verwendet oder vorgeschlagen worden sind, werden beschrieben und ausgewertet. Es wird festgestellt, daß hauptsächlich wegen der begrenzten Kenntnis über die endgültige Funktion der essentiellen Fettsäuren sowie der daraus biosynthetisch entstandenen Verbindungen die Versuche zur Quantifizierung des Bedarfs an essentiellen Fettsäuren zu unsicheren Ergebnissen führen würden. Eine vorläufige Methode zur Bestimmung des Bedarfs an essentiellen Fettsäuren wird vorgeschlagen, welche auf der beschränkten Kenntnis über die Funktion der essentiellen Fettsäuren und der daraus entstandenen biologisch aktiven Verbindungen beruht." @default.
