In order to avoid problems of knotting and excluded volume, the discussion here has been restricted to three-dimensional eigenfunctions with near plectonemic symmetry, i.e., eigenfunctions which cross each constant z plane only twice. It is concluded that at the natural levels of superhelical density that are found for DNA in vivo, the DNA free of protein must be in a highly reduced configurational entropy state. The impact of this conclusion on issues of entanglement, chromosome replication and segregation, and chromosome organization are discussed." @default.
