- W2021504498 abstract "A situation-centered approach to language acquisition-though generally believed useful-may prove inadequate for reaching communicative competence in a foreign language if class meetings turn into series of disassociated, simulated situations. Not propelled by a vision of the whole, and thus insecure in gauging progress, students may lose interest. These considerations led me to shape a conversation and composition course that would assure both continuity and variety: a course centered on the experiences of U.S. tourists in a Germanspeaking country.' Students progress in a natural way, increasing both their cultural understanding and their linguistic competence. The variety so essential to successful language instruction is achieved naturally. A course focusing on tourism encourages the use of many different visual aids (slides, magazines, photos, etc.). Potentially it includes every possible Redeabstcht (expressing wishes, intentions, emotions, etc.) and Themenkrets (universal human experiences, such as friendship, love, conflicts; topical issues, such as the modern family, the peace movement, education). Low points and highlights, ordinary episodes, serious episodes, humorous episodes-all these are part of the tourist experience and should be considered in the classroom. The focus on tourism also promotes productive role playing (as customer, visitor, stranger, friend, host, guest, participant, skeptic, witness, and enthusiast). Since students prepare for their roles by working together outside of class-thus forming close relationships-frequent role playing in groups of two or more is particularly conducive to a positive class atmosphere. Several additional factors support the notion of a course centered on tourism. Foreign language study, much as travel, enables one to step out of routine activities and customary verbal responses: Speaking in a foreign language, Joyce Maynard said of her recent travels, I ... have a completely different thing to say.2 A tourist views even the most ordinary surroundings with curiosity, and the simplest language transactions in the foreign language become events. Students acting as tourists tend to maintain this readiness and capacity for wonder throughout the semester. Imitating tourists who comment extensively on their experiences, students shed some of their self-consciousness. They shatter many of their own stereotypical images of Germany and" @default.
