- W2021582274 abstract "Abstract Impact-collision ion scattering spectroscopy (ICISS) has shown the existence of isolated single vacancies and clustering vacancies on MgO(100) surfaces. Both polished and ion-sputtered surfaces have such vacancies and vacancy clusters, even when LEED shows a sharp 1 × 1 pattern. The concentrations of various kinds of vacancies are estimated for the sputtered surface on the basis of the intensity change of scattered ions due to shadowing effects. Small clusters of vacancies begin to decrease in number by heat treatment at lower temperatures as compared with larger clusters. Both ion-sputtered and polished surfaces become almost free from vacancies by annealing between 1380 and 1410° C. Above 1430° C, thermal etch pits appear on the surface." @default.
