- W2021651244 abstract "Respiratory responses to nerve stimulation in the cat were examined after transverse transections at various brain levels. Stepwise elimination of rostral parts of the brain reduces the rate of spontaneous breathing progressively. The respiratory responses to vagal and sciatic stimulation are very similar in decorticate and intact animals. In decorticate cats, vagal stimulation can produce either tachypnoea or apnoea, depending on the frequency used. After precollicular cuts, vagal excitation causes exclusively inhibition of breathing. The tachypnoea, following sciatic stimulation, is converted into oligopnoea or apnoea only by intercollicular transection. The effects of pentobarbitone injections and of transections, progressing in caudal direction, are additive. Both procedures eliminate first the acceleratory neurons. The latter possess therefore a more rostral localisation than their deceleratory antagonists. The tachypnoeic responses involve polysynaptic pathways; they exhibit a longer latency and higher sensitivity to anaesthetics." @default.
